About Extang
Innovation in truck bed covers since 1982
Our Story
In 1982, Steve Landsem saw a problem that the truck industry wasn’t solving. As an avid outdoorsman and truck owner, he understood what hardworking people needed: a tonneau cover that actually protected your truck bed, was durable enough for real use, and didn’t require drilling holes to install. That vision led to the birth of Extang, right here in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
What started as a mail-order operation selling headlight covers evolved into something much bigger. In 1984, we introduced our game-changing no-drilling tonneau cover — the first of its kind. But we didn’t stop there. We kept innovating, kept listening to our customers, and kept pushing the boundaries of what was possible. When we pioneered the tri-fold tonneau design, we fundamentally changed the industry. Competitors followed, but we were the first.
For over four decades, Extang has remained committed to that original vision: engineering the most innovative truck bed covers on the market. We’ve grown from a garage operation to a 70,000 square-foot state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Ann Arbor, where we design, engineer, and build our products. Yet the core of who we are hasn’t changed. We’re still driven by the same mission Steve had in 1982 — to build truck covers that work as hard as you do.
In 2007, we joined the Truck Hero Inc. family, gaining resources and expertise while maintaining our independence and our commitment to innovation. That partnership has strengthened our ability to invest in R&D, expand our product lines, and serve truck owners across North America with the quality and reliability they deserve.
What We Build
We engineer tonneau covers for every truck owner, every budget, and every lifestyle. Whether you’re a contractor securing tools on job sites, an outdoor enthusiast protecting gear for weekend adventures, or an everyday driver looking for security and weather protection, we’ve engineered a solution that matches your needs and exceeds your expectations.
Our soft folding collection — including our Trifecta system — delivers lightweight innovation with the folding design we pioneered. For those who demand maximum durability, our hard folding covers like the Solid Fold, Encore, and Endure ALX offer industrial-strength protection with engineered sealing systems that keep your cargo dry in any weather. We also manufacture roll-up covers like the BlackMax and Revolution for quick access and sleek styling. And for contractors and fleet operators, our toolbox covers integrate seamlessly with your workflow.
Every product line is built with the same engineering rigor. We don’t cut corners on materials. We don’t compromise on design. We don’t settle for “good enough.” When you buy an Extang cover, you’re buying the result of decades of innovation, testing, and refinement. You’re buying something we’d use on our own trucks.
Our Innovation
Innovation isn’t just a word at Extang — it’s who we are. We hold more patents than any other truck accessories company in North America. That’s not because we’re trying to beat a number. It’s because we can’t help ourselves. Every time our engineers see a problem, they solve it. Every time a customer shows us a gap, we fill it with something better than it was before.
We engineered Jaw-Grip clamps so your cover stays secure without drilling. We developed the EZ-Lock system for tool-free installation that actually stays locked. We created EnduraShield panels that resist fading, dents, and corrosion. Our MaxHinge double-pivot technology ensures smooth folding for years. Our Advanced Sealing System keeps rain and moisture out while allowing airflow to prevent moisture buildup.
Our 70,000 square-foot facility in Ann Arbor is where the magic happens. Here, our designers and engineers work side-by-side with our manufacturing team. This vertical integration means we control every step of the process — from initial concept to final assembly. When we identify a potential improvement, we can implement it immediately. We test everything rigorously before it reaches your truck. We believe that American manufacturing, done right, can compete with anyone in the world.
Our Commitment
Quality Without Compromise
We build tonneau covers to last decades, not years. Every weld, every seam, every component is engineered for durability. We use premium materials because we know what happens when corners are cut — your cover fails when you need it most. We’d rather over-engineer something than have it disappoint you.
American Manufacturing & Innovation
We design, engineer, and manufacture in America — specifically in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where we’ve been innovating for four decades. We employ American workers, we source quality materials, and we invest in the infrastructure that keeps us at the forefront of truck accessories. Supporting American manufacturing isn’t just good business — it’s the right thing to do.
Customer Satisfaction Above All
Your truck cover needs to work. It needs to keep your bed secure. It needs to seal out rain. It needs to look good. It needs to last. We stand behind every Extang product because we believe in what we’ve built. If something doesn’t work the way you expect, we make it right. Your satisfaction is the only metric that matters.
